By Luke Pritchard, Director, Beyond Alliance
When we think about climate change, it’s easy to focus only on CO₂—but there’s another group of pollutants that are just as urgent, if not more so in the near term. Superpollutants like methane, black carbon, and refrigerants are responsible for roughly half of the warming the planet has experienced to date. The good news? Reducing them is one of the fastest ways we can slow near-term warming—and that’s where we at Beyond Alliance are helping companies step up and act.
Today, I’m excited to announce a new package of efforts from the Beyond Alliance designed to help companies move from ambition to action on superpollutants. These efforts come alongside a $100 million corporate commitment by leading companies to invest in high-impact superpollutant reduction projects by 2030. In addition to serving as the coordinating partner of the Superpollutant Action Initiative, we are advancing complementary work to ensure corporate superpollutant investments deliver rapid, high-integrity climate impact. We do this by providing technical support, market guidance, and capacity-building—working closely with partners like the Environmental Defense Fund, Carbon Containment Lab, Effectera, and Calyx Global.
Building the Tools Companies Need
To support corporate action, we’re launching three interconnected efforts:
1. Superpollutant Roadmap
We’re partnering with Carbon Containment Lab to create a science-led, global roadmap that identifies the highest-impact opportunities for the private sector to reduce superpollutants. Developed with input from a best-in-class advisory group of scientific experts, the roadmap will identify the opportunities to deliver the fastest, most meaningful results across key corporate levers, including value-chain interventions, policy advocacy, and the voluntary carbon market. When it’s released later this year, it will be publicly available so others—companies, investors, and governments—can join in and scale the impact.
2. Superpollutant Academy
We’ve also developed the Superpollutant Academy, in collaboration with Calyx Global. This hands-on training, kicking off next month, equips companies with the science, market insights, and practical skills to evaluate and procure superpollutant reduction projects available on the voluntary carbon market. Participants will also get access to a dedicated Calyx platform with ratings and inventory data for over 250 projects, so they can make informed, high-integrity decisions (learn more about how to participate here)
3. Scope 3 Refrigerants RFP
Finally, we’re partnering with Effecterra to identify and mobilize investment opportunities in Scope 3 refrigerant decarbonization through a new RFP process that will conclude later this year. This initiative will help companies engage suppliers to reduce refrigerant emissions—one of the fastest-growing sources of superpollutants as cooling demand rises globally. By targeting these emissions in the value chain, companies can catalyze scalable, supplier-led solutions that complement their broader climate strategies.
Companies are increasingly looking for credible, near-term climate actions that complement long-term decarbonization—and superpollutants are one of the most powerful levers to deliver that impact. At Beyond Alliance, we are excited to be helping companies move from ambition to action on these critical climate pollutants.
